TREMENDOUS GROWTH OF CRUISE BUSINESS in KLAIPĖDA

The amber in a jewel crown – KLAIPĖDA – the Lithuanian lighthouse in the sea waiting for the vessels to come. Klaipeda, which stretches along the coats of the Curonian Lagoon, more often than any other larger cities enthrals the hearts of people, because it is situated in a fascinated natural setting and is renowned for its dynamic and charming atmosphere. One can step along the narrow streets of the Old Town and smell the ancient atmosphere where craftsmen, shoemakers, blacksmiths, bakers lived. The beauty of the Old Town with neo-Gothic buildings and frame houses is a real magnet for visitors seeking for the intangible impression of something very old and precious.

Vessels coming to Klaipeda can take a glimpse of the edge of the Curonian Spit one of the UNESCO heritage sites – Juodkrantė, Preila, Nida. Moreover the travellers’ eyes are caught by the marvellous sight of pines, which as if wave in salutation with their coniferous branches. Palanga, a Lithuanian resort, is famous for its Amber Museum, Botanical Park, “Birutė’s Hill” and etc. A long pier to the sea, crowded at sunset, is a highlight of Palanga attractions.
Tremendous development of cruise industry in Klaipeda has been observed throughout the last few years. In 2007 cruise season, we expect over 35 000 cruise passengers which is 40 % more than in 2006. In 2006 we had 25 014 cruse passengers - 4 % more than in 2005. While in 2005, the cruise passenger growth was 70 % more compared to 2004. Finally, in 2004 growth comprised 62 % compared to 2003.

In 2003 modern Cruise Vessel Terminal was built in the heart of the remarkable historic downtown of Klaipeda, with its outstanding places of interest and a wide range of entertainment facilities allows for continued good service in order to satisfy travellers’ needs. The Cruise Vessel Terminal with the investments of 25 million Litas is significant step towards the development of cruise industry in Lithuania.

As the number of cruise vessels is growing in Klaipeda port, Klaipeda State Seaport Authority plans to construct a new Passenger and Cargo Terminal that might become an alternative place for berthing cruise vessels in summer.
